Chapter 11

The loud bonging sounded through the entire house, and I briefly wondered if the people in Berta’s inn could hear it. It continued for another second before I realized it was the fucking doorbell.

Kaz looked at me with her hand over her ears and fear in her violet eyes.

“Holy hell. It’s the doorbell! There’s someone–” I shouted, but suddenly the sound stopped, so I lowered my voice to a normal volume. “There’s someone at the front door.”

“Is it your friend from Ari-zone-ia?” Kaz asked.

“No.” I shook my head. “He won’t be here until tomorrow night at the earliest.”

I had no fucking clue who might be ringing the doorbell, and I fought the urge to run upstairs and grab my dagger from the room to the BBBBB&B. Then I remembered there had been a long iron poker near the old combination stove and fireplace. I hurried to grab it before I went to the front door, and as I gripped the handle, I realized I was probably being a bit overly paranoid.

The guy looked like he was about sixty, and I couldn’t think of why he might be knocking on my front door this morning.

“Excellent, excellent,” the guy said, and he rubbed his hands together with excitement. “I was hoping I might speak with you directly, and just my luck, here you are!”

I gave him sort of an awkward smile because I had no idea what he wanted, and the look seemed to kick him into gear.

“Ah, yes,” the guy said. “My apologies. My name is Donald Green, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“Sam,” I said as I took his hand to shake it. “What can I do for you Mr. Green?”

“I was wondering when you might be opening the inn for business?” Mr. Green asked, and there was a glint of interest in his eyes. “I’ve always wanted to bring my family here for a stay, and my children will be home for winter break before much longer. I don’t expect you’ll be done with renovations by then, but I was hoping I could surprise them with plans for the summer as one of their Christmas presents.”

Donald Green rambled for another moment as my mind spun.

This guy wanted to bring his family to stay at the inn? My inn? Possibly the creepiest-looking place I’d ever seen, that looked just as
